محققان بر این باورند که توالی یابی دقیق ژنوم گیاه دانه تسبیحی ) goat grass ( که در برخی از
کشورها بعنوان علف هرز شناخته می شود، می تواند به بهبود امنیت غذایی جمعیت فزاینده
جهان کمک کند. گندم بعلت سازگاری با انواع مختلف اقلیم ها، بیشترین سطح زیر کشت را در
جهان دارد. همچنین ماده غذایی اصلی بیش از یک سوم جمعیت جهان و 21 درصد از کالری
مصرفی کل جهان را تشکیل می دهد. گندم یکی از بزرگترین و پیچیده ترین ژنوم ها را در میان گیاهان زراعی دارد که
توالی یابی آن را مشکل می کند.
گونه ای از گندم که برای تهیه نان معمولی مصرف می شود حاصل تلاقی بین گونه گندم emmer با گیاه دانه تسبیحی
( Aegilops tauschii ( است که به حدود 2111 سال قبل برمی گردد. ژن هایی از دانه تسبیحی به افزایش تحمل سرما و
بیماری در گندم کمک می کند و بهمین دلیل است که گندم قابل کشت در بسیاری از نقاط دنیا شده است. در مقاله ای که در
مجله Nature Plants منتشر شده است نویسندگان آن توضیح داده اند که شناخت بیشتر از ویژگی های پیچیده گیاه
دانه تسبیحی می تواند به تولید ارقام جدید گندم با سازگاری بهتر در شرایط سخت آب و هوایی و مقاومت بیشتر در برابر
بیماری ها کمک کند.

Wheat is the world’s most widely grown crop cereal thanks to its adaptability to a number of climates. It is a staple food for more than a third of the world’s human population and accounts for 20 percent of all calories consumed globally. However, it has one of the largest and most complex genomes compared of crop plants, making sequencing difficult. The common bread wheat species we are familiar with today arose when emmer wheat cross-bred with goat grass (Aegilops tauschii) around 8,000 years ago. Genes from goat grass contributed to bread wheat’s tolerance of cold and diseases, which is why both species are able to grow in so many parts of the world. Understanding the complex genetic features of goat grass could help develop new wheat varieties that adapt to stressors like climate extremes and disease, authors say in a comment article for Nature Plants published today.
